Our Story
Bronze Dog® Muzzle represents the culmination of founder John Smith’s mission to create restraint products that make life better for dogs and owners.
After adopting his first dog Max 15 years ago, John was struck by the lack of comfortable, ethical muzzles on the market. He had enjoyed training dogs growing up on his family farm, and refused to use the harsh, poorly fitting equipment available at the time.
Instead, John combined his expertise in product design and passion for dog welfare to conceive of a new line of muzzles, halters, and collars. After extensive prototyping and testing, Bronze Dog® Muzzle was launched in 2009.
We started as a small operation in John’s home garage, hand-making each muzzle. As word spread, Bronze Dog gradually expanded into a 5000 sq ft workshop, allowing us to bring production in-house and craft products on a larger scale.
Even as we’ve grown, our commitment to quality and compassion has stayed the same. John still oversees every step of the design and manufacturing process.

About Our Founder
Bronze Dog® Muzzle was founded by John Smith, a lifelong dog lover and product design engineer.
Growing up on a farm, John learned hands-on how to humanely train and handle all types of dogs. He enjoyed working with problem dogs that others gave up on, figuring out how to bring out their best traits.
John was always fascinated by how everyday tools and equipment could be engineered to improve both human and animal lives. He pursued this passion through an engineering degree from Cal Poly and job with a prestigious product design firm.
When John adopted his first dog Max in 2004, he was eager to put his training and design skills to the test. But he found most muzzles and restraints on the market uncomfortable, unsafe, or built only for looks over function.
Seeing an opportunity, John set out to develop the kind of equipment he wished he had for Max – muzzles and restraints that were both gentle and effective.
In his garage workshop, John created meticulous prototypes and tested them with local rescue groups. His designs balanced safety and control with comfort and wearability. By focusing on the dog’s experience, John ensured the tools helped empower dogs, not simply restrain them.
Bronze Dog® Muzzle was born out of this passion. 15 years later, John still oversees every step of the design and manufacturing process. He is deeply involved in testing new products and improving designs based on customer feedback.
John’s aim has stayed the same over the years – provide dog owners the safest, most humane and effective muzzles and restraints possible. He finds great joy in hearing success stories of dogs helped and changed by Bronze Dog® equipment.
When he’s not inventing new products, John volunteers at a local shelter training shy and reactive dogs. He lives in California with his wife Jenn, son Calvin, and of course Max, the beloved dog who started it all.
